An opportunity to own a beautiful former chapel converted by Interior Design Masters runner-up Jack Kinsey has come up in Scoulton, near Wymondham.

Jack appeared on the 2023 series of the BBC programme and made it all the way to the finals, impressing the judges with his thoughtful designs. He bought the chapel in Scoulton in late 2017 and converted it with his partner, and now it has hit the open market.

“It was like one of those last gems that we could get our hands on to turn into something really different and magical,” said Jack on how it felt to find the chapel, which he purchased on a whim for £200,000.

“You’ll see old barns come up and old chapels come up, but they don't come up very often,” he added. “So when we got this it felt like it was like one of the last ones that were coming up – I think I'd describe it as a bit of a gem really.”

The renovation project took several years, and saw the couple bring it back to life with modern features and characterful touches such as plasterwork ceilings and columns.

“It was really fun and the space was so easy to work with because it was such an open plan huge void,” said Jack on the renovation process. “[The chapel] was just sort of asking to be divvied up into specific spaces.”

Today the transformed Old Methodist Chapel is available for a guide price of £675,000. Selling agents Fine & Country say that the property “just oozes history” and “offers a balance of bygone age with contemporary elegance all coming together to provide a welcoming luxurious home”.

First opened in 1909 and serving until the 1970s, the chapel has been sympathetically converted by the former owners to reflect its late Edwardian roots (a period sometimes referred to as ‘the golden age’), with vaulted ceilings and original flooring including nine beautifully worn foundation stones.

Each fixture and fitting has been carefully handpicked to reflect the aura and shape of the chapel and the curved theme of the interior design takes inspiration from the building’s original arched windows.

Upon entering The Old Methodist Chapel, you are met with the warm wooden flooring and impressive high ceilings of the open plan family space, with a kitchen, dining and relaxing area.

The modern kitchen features a curved island in the centre, making it great for preparing food or socialising, as well as a built-in double oven, sleek white units and a decorative ceiling. It also has a separate utility room with a WC positioned next to the entrance lobby, allowing for extra practical storage space.

The property also boasts a separate formal sitting room with underfloor heating, panelled walls and folding doors leading to the Mediterranean-styled sheltered terrace.

This room is also home to a floating wooden staircase, which leads to the luxurious master bedroom – Jack’s personal highlight of the house.

“My favourite area is the master bedroom,” said Jack. “Because it’s got bi-fold doors on the balcony and it just looks over country views, basically it's kind of unspoiled.”

The Mediterranean walled courtyard at the back of the former chapel is surrounded by bamboo and olive trees and is an ideal space for al fresco dining. This area also overlooks a pretty pond surrounded by formal hedging and with an Indonesian tree root in the centre.

The secluded landscaped lawns are complemented by traditional garden roses from local company Peter Beales Roses and an ornate folly that was once used at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The village of Scoulton is just two miles from Hingham, which has a doctors’ surgery, dentist, supermarket, cafés, shops, a library and the White Hart pub, and there are regular bus routes from Scoulton to Watton, Wymondham and Norwich city centre.
