A country road on the outskirts of Norwich has subsided causing drivers to cautiously navigate the treacherous track.

Part of Little Melton Road on the way to Hethersett, near the Crusaders Rugby Club, has collapsed leaving a drop down into the verge.

Highways officials have confirmed that it's putting measures in places to "ensure the safety of road users."

Kathryn Cross, Conservative district councillor for Hethersett, said: "Part of the road has totally subsided because of the rainfall.

"It's extremely dangerous.

"People need to be very cautious going down there, especially in the dark.

"My colleague was straight on to highways, who put out some fencing around the area.

"However those panels slipped into the water as the road got worse, so we contacted highways again and understand they are going out again."

"We are also seeking to identify the owners of the land affected.

"We are currently putting in place additional measures to ensure the safety of road users along the road, including additional fencing and barriers as well as further signage and lighting.

"Once the reason for the subsidence is identified we will put in place plans for a permanent repair that addresses the root cause."

Mrs Cross added: "I urge highways to get it fixed as soon as possible before it gets worse.

"Hopefully it's still safe to use but if not, then the road needs to be closed to ensure people's safety."
