A fresh bid to build a massive chicken farm housing more than 350,000 birds has been met with renewed objections.

Hundreds of villagers along with an MP have opposed the farm plans on land off Swangey Lane, in Rockland All Saints near Attleborough since it was first announced last year.

PF Southgate Ltd wants to build eight poultry sheds and other related developments such as feed bins to house more than 45,000 chickens each.

A renewed application has been submitted which has made adjustments to the layout of the site to meet drainage requirements and also has changed the proposed access design.

But opponents have said the new proposal has failed to address their long list of concerns which includes the risk of pollution, traffic safety fears and smells and vermin coming from the site.

Norfolk County Council Highways officers remain critical of the plans and have said the road serving the site is "inadequate" to cope with the increased HGV traffic.

The Environment Agency also renewed their wide-ranging objections which included fears it could lead to Swangey Fen - a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) being impacted by pollution.

Rocklands Parish Council has said it continues to oppose it "in the strongest possible terms" and the Breckland Astronomical Society and several locals continue to voice their disapproval.

Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman has previously written a letter of objection to Breckland Council twice saying the project would be “unsustainable, inappropriate and out of keeping with the surrounding area”.

It is not yet known if he will renew his criticism.

The development is one of a number of contentions large-scale farming developments which have been met with fierce objection.

Nearby in Methwold, plans for two 'mega farms' rearing millions of chickens and thousands of pigs a year have been the focus of a row in the local community.

Parker Planning Services, the agent of PF Southgate Ltd, did not respond to a request for comment.
